The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Win at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification May Address This Issue

As any major prize-giving event nears, there’s always a demand to include of new categories to acknowledge unsung work and satisfy the spirits of fans who have specialized interests.

My colleague has already made supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. So would board games, this being someone's personal cause. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand is the most urgent above others. The demand is this: We need an award type for logic-based games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and inevitably spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that movie academies don’t do it. Yet it remains a necessary evil in the world of video games, which are so diverse they hardly constitute a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies presently include award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these six categories successfully include many game types, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Think about these this year’s best games, all very different: structural challenges in a particular game, intense tile-matching from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. Which classification works among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.

Acknowledgment Issues

Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers released every year that have no home during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated for anything during that awards season
  • Another creative title was excluded during that ceremony
  • Popular arranging title got ignored in 2021
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers barely qualified for niche award types

Importance of Logic Titles

Frequently they represent compact experiences, but the art of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles stand as most popular titles worldwide maintaining this status for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience challenges popular creative games for the title of most purchased experience; it also contends for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. You could fill a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.

To emphasize again, these are games without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers operate at the demanding boundary of video game design, creating some of essential manifestations of gaming itself. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
